    Workshop Agenda

    8:00 AM-8:30 AM Registration

8:30-10:00 Conducting Climbing Gear Inspections: Beyond the Basics

    Melissa LeVange, SHELTER Tree, Inc.

Most climbers do quick inspections of their own equipment every day

because it is a “shall” in the ANSI Z133 safety standard, but how thorough

is that gear inspection? Learn what is considered excessive wear and

tear that could lead to equipment failure; understand what to look for; and

create team systems to build trust and integrity in your equipment

    inventory.

Climbers are encouraged to bring equipment they have questions about.

    10:00-10:15 Break

10:15-12:00 Brown Tail Moth in Maine

    Allison Kanoti, State Entomologist

An overview of Brown Tail Moths history, life cycle,

identification, precautions, personal protective equipment, health effects,

range in Maine, and preferred host.

    Shore Line Zoning & Pesticides

John Pietroski, Manager of Pesticide Programs

A discussion of the Board of Pesticides, rules and regulations concerning

spraying near water, drift concerns, label review, and enforcement.

    12:00-1:00 Lunch

1:00-2:15 Central Maine Power’s “Safety City”

    Steve Newman-Central Maine Power

A complete overview of safety and hazard concerns when working near

powerlines and a comprehensive approach of how to handle potentially

    dangerous electrical scenarios.

    2:15-2:30 Break

2:30-3:30 Tree Structure and Wood Decay

    Kevin Smith, USDA Forest Service

The words “decay” and “rot” can inspire fear and urgent action for the

teeth in our mouth and wooden beams in the barn. Should that be the

same for decay in living trees? The presentation will explore what tree

decay is, what causes it, and what may be an appropriate level of

    concern.

3:30 Close of workshop and records collection
